Diablo III Launch: Could Have Gone Better

May 17, 2012 in Uncategorized

Blizzzard’s release of Diablo III had gamers sitting on the edge of their seats, feverishly copy-pasting their password and hitting enter again and again as they attempted to get into the game (or get back in again, for some). However, despite needing some patience to log in, and the occasional restarts to game servers, their game uptime has been a wild improvement over the vanilla days of World of Warcraft’s first release, when a five-hour queue to get into the game was an average for the first week. And that was just logging in.

To be sure, Diablo III’s release could have been smoother. I’m sure launch dates are everybody’s nightmare at Blizz HQ. But with a smooth, lag-free game play and only a slight snafu with getting back into game (if you left the party and got to the menu screen, you couldn’t enter again), I am pleasantly surprised to have been able to play the game for almost 14 hours on the first day.

Of course, if only everyone could be so lucky. When servers were shut down for “emergency maintenance”, Blizzard forums were loaded with complaints, defense, and jokes alike. Blizzard’s now-epic thread was filling with posts at a rate of about a hundred posts every five seconds. “Warp speed!!” as some posts commented, adding to the speedy flow of posts. One user even copy-pasted the Wikipedia page on Honey Badgers to provide amusement, and was requoted several times throughout the 415-page thread.

Many users expressed their surprise at being able to have several hours of smooth gameplay. Others were a lot more critical, ignoring the fact that a mere day after release, the servers were actually quite stable. Could Blizzard’s launch day have gone better? Definitely. With many unable to get in, and an emergency maintenance about ten hours after release that lasted three hours, there are obviously some things that Blizzard needs to work on for future launch dates. Perhaps if they had given themselves a little more time, a smoother one would have been achievable. It is, however, probably quite difficult to test-run the servers for a million plus players running rampage the second logging on is permitted. Especially seeing as Amazon declared that Diablo III topped the charts in pre-order numbers. So even if Blizzard keeps underestimating the pressure of a million people on their servers, it seems that they’re doing enough right to hold the market on PC gaming and 591 pages of grateful fans. Now, since their second server maintenance is finished, excuse me while I try and log in.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has landed!

May 4, 2012 in Uncategorized

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 came big expectations and a huge publicity following at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre.

From what we can see there is nothing special about its hardware and personally I think they could have made it a bit sexier looking, it’s a tad boring for my liking. Take HTC’s One X for example that is a good, sleek looking phone, but this S3 is failing to do it for me. The previous Galaxy the S2 had harsher corners and a nice textured back (although a bit cheap and plasticy when removed) it was a nice feature but with this new S3 it’s very different, very curved and quite organic almost which in my personal opinion is quite dull.

The S3 features a 4.8” Super AMOLED 720P display and is running Androids tastiest OS yet, version 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich yummy! The rear camera is 8 megapixels with a single LED flash which again is nothing majorly new. With all the hype and rumours around a 12 megapixel camera I kind of had my heart set on that and now I’m feeling a little disappointed. It also has a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera that is capable of recording 720P video at 30fps.

But the good news is, under the bonnet is the quad-core processor! Which should make for a pretty fast phone indeed which is excellent news as there is nothing worse than phone lag! Another thing I found pretty cool about the Galaxy S3 although novel, is the water rippling effect on the lock screen. Yes I admit it really doesn’t do much but it is nice to have something to show your mates that have “lesser phones” as you can now do the “yeah but can your phone do this? Bam!” kinda thing. It also has a card slot! Thank god! It sounds a bit petty and not a huge deal but I find not having a card slot, really annoying. So I’m pleased it has one and it’s expandable to 64GB, sweet!

According to Samsung the S3 is a phone that “understands you” as it has their SmartStay technology. This basically can monitor the users eye movements using the front facing camera and keeps your screen from dimming or switching off when you’re looking at it… which let’s be honest is pretty freaking cool!

In conclusion it does look like the S3 is going to be a pretty good phone. Although I’m disappointed with the camera and its average aesthetic none the less it will be up there in the top 10 mobiles for quite some time. I don’t think personally I would buy one over the HTC One X as it hasn’t wowed me enough with its features, maybe I read too many rumours and it didn’t live up to my expectations. Hopefully we will have a full hands on review soon!

The Next Galaxy.. Stand out from the Sheep

April 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

Yesterday Samsung launched a twenty-four hour countdown clock telling us that we could take the next step in… so many hours.

We waited for the countdown clock to hit 0 and when it did.. the website crashed, great.

But we have found from The Verge what was revealed on the tgeltaayehxnx website was this video:

It wasn’t the most informing of videos as we suspected but, from the video we have concluded that the “Next Galaxy” will fit perfectly in your hand and allow you to stand out from.. a herd of sheep? We think this could be a little dig aimed at Apple users or it could be the world’s first Mobile device aimed at Farmers?

The little pebbles like objects / paint blobs got us thinking though.. could be something to do with its form factor?

We shall find out on May 3rd.. Stay tuned.

Instagram vs Lightbox

April 20, 2012 in Uncategorized

Photography is always on the move and has seen many trends. It is becoming more and more common for people to edit their photos using their smartphone through apps using different filters etc then sharing them via social networking sites. These apps are becoming so popular that even the big dogs want to get involved. Social network giants Facebook recently bought out Instagram for a reported $1billion, that’s some serious dough. So are other competing apps just as good.. if not better? That’s what we’re going to find out.

 The Contenders

In the red corner we have Instagram that has a two year history of being an iOS app and is now available for the Android market.

And in the blue corner we have Lightbox. Which is a much younger app compared to its rival Instagram as its not long out of beta stage. But toe to toe, this could be a good fight.

Price and OS

Instagram is a free app for both Android (2.2 and up) and iOS (3.1.2. or later)

Lightbox is also a free app currently only available on the Android market (for Android 2.1 and up)

 Overview

Both are social networking apps. You can share pictures to various social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr for Instagram or additionally to Flickr and Foursquare for Lightbox. You can even upload your own pics to the Lightbox website too which is pretty cool.

Smartphones apps like this need plenty of people using them in order to survive and prove its worth on the marketplace. The heavyweight Instagram has a huge user base of around 40 million including several celebrities like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Instagram’s younger opponent Lightbox has a relatively small user base compared, at around 5 million but amongst their users include National Geographic and NASA.

Instagram: At first glance seems very simple and easy to use, not many options and different settings to choose from which in my opinion can be improved upon. With Instagram you cannot access your phones camera functions such as macro, black and white etc.. you use a basic one that’s built into the app. The different settings you can pick from are changing the frame, brightness and contrast and rotate. There are several filters to choose from though you have a choice of Normal, Amaro, Rise, Hudson, Sierra, X-Pro, Lo-Fi, Earlybird, Sutro, Toaster, Brannan, Inkwell, Walden, Hefe, Valencia, Nashville, 1977 and Kelvin. All examples are listed below.

It’s easy to upload pictures on Instagram, just tick the social networking sites you wish to share your pictures on and done, simples. You can even enable geo-tagging to your photos so other users know where it was taken.

Lightbox: First impressions, there are a few cool settings to choose from but I would like to see a few more. The great thing about Lightbox is you use your phones camera, so you have access to all the other settings that your camera has, unlike Instagram which is far more simplistic. The options you can choose from with Lightbox are; flip which reverses the image on screen (pretty cool), rotate and you even have a crop option where you can choose different aspect ratios as well as standard cropping. There are a multitude of filters to choose from such as Original, Instafix, Ansel, Lomo, Testino, Retrom Redscale, XPro, B&W, Sepia, Cyano, Portia, Fisheye, Dotty, 8 Bit, Georgia, Sahara and HDR. All examples are listed below.

Example of Lightbox’s cropping option below.

Uploading pictures on Lightbox is fairly similar to Instagram.

Conclusion:

Both apps have a different feel and I also think a slightly different target market. The Instagram app is very simple, both in terms of interface and usability. I feel it could be a bit more advanced but at the same time the whole point of Instagram is that it’s simple, after all it was developed on iOS for Apple users.

Lightbox on the other hand has many more options to choose from as you can use your phones own camera and settings. I also think the filters are a bit more creative and fun. My choice if I had to pick one I would go for Lightbox, it’s a bit more technical with more options to choose from.

Analogue TV Signal To Be Switched Off Tonight in London

April 17, 2012 in Uncategorized

After 75 long years of analogue television signal.. after midnight tonight London will see it no more. To mark this special occasion an event will take place at the Crystal Palace relay transmitter (the one that looks like a lame Eiffel Tower) on the 18th and 19th of April.

The first light show will take place at 9:15PM and will be attended by celebrities such as Sir David Attenborough and Chris Evans.

Digital UK has stated that fewer than one in four households have an analogue set in their home and the majority of these are second televisions.

Once the signal has been switched off, 83% of the UK will be digital with parts of Tyne Tees, Meridian and Northern Ireland to be switched over later this year.

R.I.P our fuzzy friend.
