OlloClip for iPhone 4 / 4S Review

March 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

Being an Android fan boy I hate to admit that the iPhone 4 / 4S is one of the best smartphones money can buy as of this moment in time. But.. and this is quite a large but, one of the iPhone 4 / 4S’s flaws in terms of photography is its camera. It has a fixed lens with a narrow field of view and average macro capabilities (like many smartphones). But the folks over at OlloClip say “As semi-professional photographers and hobbyists alike, we’re firm believers that the most important camera you own is the one you have with you.” They have a point, now iPhone users will no longer have to settle with their standard camera they now have a choice of 3 different lenses in 1 small convenient package.

The OlloClip is a very beautifully styled piece of kit design by Chong Pak under the watchful eye of the father of the OlloClip Patrick O’Neil. It comes in two colours, red & black two toned or all black and will fit the iPhone 4 / 4S so all of us Android fan boys and Windows-phonians will have to sit in the corner and cry over how non awesome our cameras are :(

To use the OlloClip it simply clips (duh) on to the corner of the phone where the camera is, unfortunately swallowing your sleep / wake button, which to be honest isn’t needed when you’re taking photos is it? So it’s not too much of an issue. The OlloClip has the fisheye lens on one side and the wide-angle lens on the opposing side, but, wait for it, if you unscrew the wide-angle lens underneath reveals the OlloClip’s macro lens, that’s 3 different lenses in 1 small unit!

In the box along with your OlloClip, you get lens caps to protect both sides of your iPhones new best friend and you even get a neat little microfiber cloth bag that doubles as a cleaning cloth, very thoughtful.

The fisheye lens provides approximately 180 degrees field of view. In the right hands you could take some really amazing shots with this lens as it produces the epic spherical effect that you get with professional 180 degree circular fisheye lenses for SLR cameras and it would be ideal for sport / action photography when you’re out mucking about with your mates at the skatepark etc.

The wide angle lens expands the iPhones native viewing angle by 2x. This lens is great for taking pictures outdoors or family portraits as you can now fit so much more in! There is a slight amount of lens barrel distortion but it will not affect photographs too much.

The macro lens has a focal distance of 13mm/.5” which provides 10x macro shots. The image quality of this lens is superb, without doubt. You will now be able to take extreme close up shots of random things around your house and see what they look like at 10x magnification.. awesome!

As a whole the OlloClip is a fantastic and extremely fun addition to any iPhone 4 /4S especially for the price. Whether you’re in to photography or not it can be used by anyone and provide you with hours upon hours of iPhone based fun. Take pictures of your cat, your car.. just about anything and inject a huge amount of awesomeness in to all of your photos.

Canon EOS C300 Receives BBC Approval

March 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

Canon has today announced that their first model from the new cinema EOS system, the ground-breaking EOS C300 has met standards required by the BBC. The approval allows both internal and external BBC production teams to use the EOS C300 for a wide range of programmes to be broadcast on the BBC’s range of High Definition channels. The C300 is now the third Canon camcorder to be approved by the BBC since January 2011, joining the epic XF305 and XF300 models.

The EOS C300 is a very impressive camcorder and it has received a fantastic response since its launch in November of 2011. The great thing about this camcorder is it merges Canon’s heritage in sensor and lens design to create one of the best compact and versatile cameras on the market today. The C300 features an 8.3 Megapixel super 35mm CMOS sensor which has been optimised for high quality full HD imaging, coupled with its compatibility with Canons wide range of EF lenses, this is hands down a bench mark model that all professional and commercial filmmakers should consider.

HTC Sense Back-Up to Close April 30th

March 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

April 30th will be a sad day for HTC Sense users as HTC are shutting down their back up service HTCSense.com

Sense users will need to do the following in order to keep their data:

  • Visit http://htcsense.com
  • Log in with your HTCSense.com username and password
  • Click the ‘Download’ button in the Account Overview section
  • A .zip file containing your data will download to your computer for easy viewing

The reason HTC are getting rid of the service is because they claim it is “undergoing a renovation to improve the services”. It makes no Sense to us that they are deleting all of the old data in order to start again, which is slightly inconvenient for current users.

After April 30th all data will no longer be accessible and will be deleted by HTC, so start backing up soon or risk losing your stuff!

Replay XD1080 Review

March 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

If you’re looking for a small and easy to use action camera that can record HD video in almost any situation then the Replay XD1080 is the perfect choice. The camera itself is a rugged cylindrical design made from aerospace Aluminium, which is mil-spec-hard-anodized for extreme durability so it can withstand the inherent demands of video-actionography, whether you’re being blasted with roost from the back of a motocross bike or taking a tumble on the slopes the Replay XD1080 can take it. Weather-resistance is a must when dealing with action-cameras, so this camera features a double o-ring sealed lens bezel, rear cap, and top push buttons to keep out those harsh elements.

The XD1080 can be mounted in a variety of different situations using its strong and versatile 3M sticky pad, which you can use to mount to your helmet, bike or skateboard etc or use other mounts such as a suction cup (sold separately) to mount to your car or other vehicle. Not many action cameras on the market can be mounted in as many tight spots as the Replay; this is due mainly to its 93mm long body that weighs in at only 85 grams fully loaded.. which is nearly the same as two bags of Monster Munch.

Included with the camera you have 2 mount types; HeimLock Mount (Swivel/Tilt): Features spherical adjustment with an eccentric cam-lock for a rock solid mount. Over 1,036,800 Mounting Positions with 360º lens rotation, 360º camera rotation, and 8º of tilt, not including the unlimited areas you can mount 1 of 4 included 3M SnapTray VHB bases. And the LowBoy Mount (Fixed): Lowest profile mount, offers 360º lens rotation. Designed to be low and out-of-the-way.

The camera has several recording modes from 720P at 30 or 60 frames per second all the way up to 1080P Full HD at 30 frames per second. The optics change depending on the shooting mode so at 1080P you will be shooting at 110.5 degrees and at 960P, 720P and photo mode you will be shooting at 135 degrees.

The simple interface is where the Replay really excels. On the top of the camera you have two buttons, these are used to power the device and start or stop recording video, there is a vibration that can be felt through a helmet letting you know that your button press has registered, making it very practical unlike some other manufacturers that use small LED lights which require you to take your helmet off to check that it’s on and recording before doing anything extreme. This is a very lightweight and well-constructed Action camera for any extreme sport and defiantly a worthy competitor to the GoPro Hero 2.

Replay XD1080 is the first action camera to stream full 1080 HD through the built-in HDMI out connector. You can record and stream your video simultaneously or just stream your video straight to an external HD recorder, so your friends can see your epic fail when and as it happens not once the camera has been surgically removed from your person.

The microphone can pick up quite a bit of wind noise at higher speeds but it’s not too much of an issue. In situations where you are moving from low to high light the Replay tends to over saturate slightly but for the most part you won’t have a problem.

This camera really is one of the best (if not the best) on the market and if you happen to buy one, you will not be disapointed in the slightest, well worth its £299.99 price tag.
