The iPad has broken the record for being the most rapidly-adopted piece of technology in history.
The tablet from Apple currently sells around 4.5 million units per quarter, according the Bernstein Research. This compares to the one million per quarter of the original iPhone when it was launched and 350,000 for the first DVD players.
Bernstein analyst Colin McGranahan notes that "the iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box," due to the lack of certain features.
However, at its current sales rate, the iPad could help the tablet sector become a $9bn a year business, putting it up there with items like TVs, smartphones and laptops.
