Wannabe directors and fans of Panasonic camcorders have learned that the long-awaited prequel to the Lord of the Rings is to be shot in 3D.

The Hobbit is to be filmed using 30 specially-designed EPIC Digital Cameras from Red Digital Cinema.

Confirming that Oscar-winner Peter Jackson will shoot the entire film in 3D, Red pointed out that it has a long history with the New Zealand director.

"I'm not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats," Jackson said.

It is hoped that filming on the Hobbit will begin next year, after a series of production delays put the project on hold.
