Father’s Day Ideas

Penny Gadget Pap No Comments

Been racking your brains about what to get your dad for Father’s Day?! Thinking that another tie just wont cut it anymore?! Here at Purelygadgets, its pretty easy to get inspiration from testing out new products all year round, so I am going to pass on some of this knowledge to help everyone stuck thinking of a cool gift for their father.

For any men who hate asking for directions! The newest sat-navs are easy to use, reliable and most importantly, can enable you to avoid the traffic! This is a great present for Father’s Day.
Have a look at some of these:
Navman S70 3D Sat Nav - this sat nav displays major landmarks in 3D graphics!
TomTom One XL TMC Sat Nav UK - perfect for those traffic haters and my personal favourite!
TomTom Go 930T Sat Nav (Europe/USA) - for the traveller, great for making your way around foreign countries on holiday or for business.
Garmin Zumo 550 Sat Nav - the best motorcycle navigation system around.

But if your dad is more of an activity type, then treat yourself to a sat-nav and use it to take him out on a day trip!!
For all those men who love action movies and are big kids at heart - an Apache helicopter! Probably the most precise and easy-to-fly remote controlled helicopter available. After just a little practice he’ll be able to take off, fly smooth and controlled circuits - even around obstacles - and bring it down to a bump-free landing. Great entertainment for the office or garden!

Eco-dad – Is your dad always trying to ‘reduce his Carbon footprint’ whilst covertly saving his wallet? Or the opposite, always leaving everything on and being one of the biggest contributors to global warming after the USA?! Either way, the Eco-button is a strong visual reminder and prompt for him to save electricity each time his computer is going to be left idle. Each time he takes a short break, by pressing the ecobutton™, the computer is put into energy saving ‘ecomode’. Great for when anyone wonders off to make a cup of tea!

Not just for fathers but anyone who gets stressed out!!
Simply upload a photo of your worst enemy to your PC screen (boss, mother-in-law etc.), then plug the Punch Head! Into a USB port and smack it repeatedly. The Punch Head! ultimate executive stress toy is about a thousand times more gratifying than sticking a photo on a dartboard. Punch it and it screams, punch it harder and it screams more painfully! All in good taste of course.

The ultimate summer gadget for fathers would have to be the Sony GPS-CS3KA GPS Unit Kit. This funky bit of kit is an essential accompaniment to any family holiday. It is an easy way of geotagging photos and video clips, so that whenever you use your camera, the compact GPS unit records details such as the date and place the photo was taken. When you return home, all the information is automatically uploaded to your computer and a Google Map shows you where each photo was taken!

Here are a few more ideas for those dads who can be rather difficult to please:
The Clip Sonic RA1009 Radio-Alarm Clock with Weather Station not only functions as an alarm for all those early mornings, it also lets you know the temperature outside before you’ve even left the comfort of your bed and opened the curtains!
Does your dad need to be brought into the 21st century still? How about a DAB radio?! Once he’s heard the brilliantly clear sound that digital radio provides, use this to edge him towards HDTVs! How about the Pure Elan RV-40 or the very distinguished Tivoli Audio Model DAB Radios

Even a few years ago, SLRs weren’t for the faint hearted. They were strictly for the professionals and those serious about their photography. Now brands such as Sony have opened up this market by providing SLRs that have the capacity for high quality pictures, responsive shooting and advanced functionality that SLR enthusiasts look for, along with a easy to understand control layout and help guide to encourage total beginners to the world of digital SLRs.

The new Sony additions are the α230 and α380. And their spec goes something like this:

  • α230 (10.2 megapixels and 2.7 inch LCD)
  • α380 (14.2 megapixels and 2.7 inch tilt LCD)
  • Compact, stylish body for light, comfortable handling
  • Quick AF Live View with tilt LCD for freestyle shooting with fast, accurate autofocus and live preview* (only model α380)
  • On-screen Help Guide and Graphic Display simplifies operation
  • SteadyShotTM INSIDE image stabilisation for crisper handheld shots with any α lens
  • HDMI output and BRAVIA Sync for easy connection with BRAVIATM TV

According to Sony, the Alpha 230 will be “world’s lightest DSLR featuring an APS-C sized image sensor and in-body image stabilisation”, both cameras have six scene modes plus on-screen Help Guides aimed to assist those new to DSLR cameras. The Quick AF Live View feature on the α380 encourages freestyle shooting, which is backed up by continuous shooting speeds of up to 2.5 fps and a newly enhanced D-Range Optimiser that automatically adjusts exposure values when faced with a composite of deep contrasting shadows and bright images.

Whether these cameras are just an update of the old Alphas with a reworked menu, HDMI and hefty price tag in tow remains to be seen, these dSLRs are due to be released in July 2009.

Am I Oscar worthy?

It’s nearing the end of May, students are off having exams/revision or if you’re none of the latter and stuck at work day dreaming about a holiday because the cursed sun is illuminating the whole room. Then fear not! I have a cure….or not =) Anyhow, for those who can’t control themselves from the yellow distraction, I come here to make your procrastination a bit more productive by talking about camcorders. So why am I talking about them? Well, we all know how popular internet viral channels are, with youtube clearly dominating the bigger chunk of the market. The recent updates have allowed their server to stream HD clips and that means all you vlog junkies, attention seekers and self directors can upload crystal-clear clips of your recreational activities! Now I know what you’re all going to fuss about next, “Why would you want spend money on a camcorder when you could get something cheaper like a webcam or a digital camera!” Well, my blog reading fans…. The Camcorder clearly wins in terms of functionality and the fact that most camcorders are now pretty small and can take PICTURES as well!

There are certain features you should consider when look at which camcorders you want to buy, I mean there’s no point in buying a £2000 camcorder only for you to use it to film yourself talking, a webcam would save you a lot for that cause! Don’t get me wrong, I’m only here to give you a reason to consider these handy video capturers and saving a few pounds or so. Anyways, when you look for a camcorder you should know what kind of purpose you want to use it for so you can choose accordingly. For a more in-depth guide click here.

For those who are too lazy to read I’ll recommend some.

  • Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 HD Camcorder
  • Sanyo VPC-CG10 HD Camcorder
  • Panasonic SDR-S15 SD Camcorder
  • Panasonic HDC-HS200 HD Camcorder
  • Panasonic HDC-TM300 HD Camcorder

Candy shaped like Skulls?

Penny Gadget Pap No Comments

With a massive boom in media players since, Apple’s entrepreneurial move to promote their iPods, no other media player has had that much exposure with their devices. And let’s face it, we’ve been pretty spoilt with the choices even if we don’t conform to the iPod phenomena. However, the choice of headphones is now an important necessity as much as choosing your media devices.

I’ve been looking at Skull Candy headphones and have been trying out a few pairs. Firstly, undoubtedly one of the coolest company names I’ve encountered and secondly, Skull Candy is more about catering to the active action sports but the paradoxical thing is that they don’t sell specialised equipment! The main attraction to this music peripheral maker is their unique graphical designs with over 40 variations giving you urbanites a bit more choice wouldn’t you think?

Most people just use the little ear buds that come with their media players and for travel, that’s great. But if you want a little more out of your music, try a pair of Skull Candy headphones. You’ll surely make a few stares :o

Skull Candy produces a wide range of high-end headphones for every budget. One of their more expensive models is the SK Pro. Intended for pro DJs, these headphones have the attributes to hold a good fight against any competitor. The bass is thumping, and the treble is crystal-clear.
